Indonesia's 250 million inhabitants are responsible for around 40% of value creation in the ASEAN region. The market potential is enormous. The government is increasingly seeking to remove protectionist trade barriers and to open the country up to world trade.

Together with the Swiss Economic Institute at the ETH Zurich, S-GE has created a ranking of the top export markets. It shows which markets are particularly attractive for Swiss SMEs.

It is also funding infrastructure projects in order to reduce logistical costs by improving connections between the individual islands. 12 different reform packages are intended to boost domestic industries, increase exports of processed products and attract more foreign direct investment.

The Indonesian economy is relatively centralized on the island of Java and its mega-city of Jakarta. Swiss SMEs should take some time for Indonesia. The country is not one that can be gained as a market without any further effort. A reliable partner on site who is familiar with the legal regulations can be very helpful.
