The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world’s leading electronic trade fair and is held each January in Las Vegas. This year the Zurich-based medical device company Ava came home with an award after winning the Best of Baby Tech Award in the category Fertility and Pregnancy. According to a statement, the award was handed out by The Bump, a parenting website, and Living Digital Times, which produces the Best of Baby Tech Award at the CES.

Ava launched a bracelet in summer 2016 that detects the fertile window in a woman’s cycle. Worn at night, the bracelet works by recording nine physiological factors that correspond to a rise in hormones indicating the onset of ovulation, including pulse, sleep quality and heart frequency. In the morning, the bracelet synchronises the data with Ava’s app to reveal a woman’s fertile days.

According to Ava, the bracelet was tested as part of a study with University Hospital Zurich. It detected an average of 5.3 fertile days – with an accuracy of 89 per cent.

Ava was founded in Zurich in 2014. The company also has an office in San Francisco.
