The Best Countries rankings, released this week by U.S. News & World Report in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and BAV Consulting, show Switzerland as best country in the world.

Switzerland tops the list of best countries.

The survey of more than 21,000 people from 36 countries in all regions of the world evaluates 80 countries. The criteria range from power and economic influence to citizenship and quality of life, to capture how nations are perceived on a global scale.

Switzerland is one of 20 new countries evaluated this year. It takes the top spot based on a combination of its attitude toward education, democracy, business and quality of life. It receives the highest rankings in the following categories:

  • Open for business

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Citizenship

  • Quality of Life

  • Cultural influence

“Our data captured widespread global concern for the social and geopolitical changes that cast many nations into uncertainty and turmoil,” said John Gerzema, chief executive of BAV Consulting. “The new rankings reflect people’s desire to restore some sense of order by rewarding nations they perceive as championing neutrality, stability and diplomacy.”

According to the "Political Risk Map 2017" of Marsh, Switzerland also appears among the only three countries that are considered fully stable in today’s world.

Switzerland has low unemployment, a skilled labor force and one of the highest gross domestic products per capita in the world, according to the CIA World Factbook. The country’s strong economy is powered by low corporate tax rates, a highly-developed service sector led by financial services and a high-tech manufacturing industry.
