Information and communications technology (ICT) is a key area for the Swiss economy. Almost all industries benefit from an increase in productivity resulting from ICT applications, which significantly boost the economy. New ICT solutions are willingly accepted by companies due to their efficiency and are profitably integrated into business procedures by employees with a great deal of ICT expertise. Many people in Switzerland are also very willing to use new software: Switzerland occupies third position in an international comparison relating to investments in software measured as a percentage of gross domestic product.

Ecolab statistics from 2014 show the extent to which ICT employees are integrated into the overall economy. According to these statistics, 36% of all ICT employees work in different industries that do not necessarily specialize in computer science or communications technology. 25% of ICT professionals are employed by IT service providers and 7% are working as FinTech experts for financial companies. Telecommunications companies, consultants, and public administration offer jobs for 5% and 4% of ICT expert respectively. Employing a significant number of well-trained ICT professionals ensures that Switzerland’s economy is in an excellent starting point for further growth and innovations. Top-class specialists are also educated in the breeding grounds for talent like the computer science departments at the ETHZ and the EPFL. They often bring their new knowledge and their ideas to the market independently, which lays the ground for a dynamic start-up and spin-off scene. The environment is also excellent for the growth areas of app and games development. There were around 30 companies in the Swiss gaming industry in 2014. Bachelor and Masters courses are also offered in Game Design at the Zurich University of the Arts.
