Automotive Industry in Mexico: Prospects and Opportunities for Swiss SMEs

Mexico has become one of the most important car manufacturers worldwide, and considerable investments will continue to be made in production lines. An interesting market is available for Swiss automotive suppliers. However, the increased absence of US investments must be expected.

Mexico is a key location for the automotive industry.

Strong Swiss automotive suppliers already in the market

Monosuisse, Autoneum and Reishauser are examples of Swiss SMEs that are already very active in the Mexican market. They will all share their experiences with other SME representatives at Impulse: Business Opportunities in the Mexican Automotive Supplier Industry on 02/02/2017 in Zurich. Mexico is expected to produce around 5 million cars each year by 2020. The location has also been able to hold its own against its Chinese competitors with respect to wage costs. “The conditions and forecasts for the development of the Mexican market are positive. Alongside US companies, German and Asian manufacturers are also investing in Mexico and ensuring constant demand for supplier parts,” explains Ulrich Hinterberger, Consultant for Latin America at Switzerland Global Enterprise. “One of the bigger challenges for Swiss SMEs in Mexico is keeping employees loyal to their company. The labor turnover rate is relatively high in certain regions due to the high demand for qualified workers,” adds Hinterberger.

Mexico’s automotive industry heavily dependent on exports

Around 80% of the vehicles manufactured in Mexico are exported. A considerable portion of these go to the USA. US companies like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler (owned by the Fiat Group since 2014) have likewise invested in production lines in Mexico in recent years. However, Ford has recently scrapped further expansion plans for a production line in San Luis Potosi (http://phys.org/news/2017-01-ford-cancels-mexican-jobs.html). This decision is linked to the import duty on goods from Mexico announced by Donald Trump. It remains to be seen how the relationship between the countries in the NAFTA alliance will develop. The Mexican ambassador Jorge Castro-Valle will take a look at this topic at the event .
