Tunnel between Chile and Argentina planned

The tunnel through the Agua Negra Pass in the Andean massif has been in the planning since 2009, and preparations are finally starting to take shape. The plan provides for two 14-km tunnels running parallel, along with two border stations. The calls for tender are likely to begin in May 2017.

The tunnel is designed to boost trade between Chile and Argentina.

Pass road at 4,780 meters barely drivable

The Agua Negra Pass has been impassable to freight transport for almost six months, and thus represents a barrier to goods transportation between the two countries of Chile and Argentina. The planned 14-km-long tunnel should help to ensure freight transport can flow all year round, thus expanding the bi-oceanic "corredor bioceánico". The tunnel is set to connect the port of Coquimbo in Chile with the Argentinian city of San Juan.

The website of Ebitan (pages in Spanish and English) provides ongoing information about the project.

Pre-qualification runs until February 2017

The pre-qualification procedures are currently underway, while the call for tender is projected to be issued in May 2017. The winning bid should be announced in 2018.

Further tunnels and new construction of the Cau Cau bridge also planned

Another tunnel is due to connect San Fernando in Argentina and the Chilean region of Bernardo O'Higgins. This tunnel is set to be 11.5 km long. The binational project development agency Ebileñas (site in Spanish) was established for the planning in 2016 and will provide ongoing information about the status of the project.

The Cau Cau bridge (Valdivia, Chile) is due to be planned yet again, after the collaboration with a Spanish company proved unsuccessful. The prerequisite for companies wanting to bid for the tender is proven experience of construction of at least five rail bridges. The Chilean Ministry of Public Works will provide information on this (site in Spanish and English).
