The Eugen Münch Award is awarded annually by the Münch Foundation to honour “innovative ideas and ground-breaking scientific work that prepare the healthcare system and public services for the future”, writes Medgate in a statement. The Basel-based healthcare provider was given a special award at this year’s Eugen Münch Award for its telemedicine concept, which the Münch Foundation described as exemplary.

Around 6 million telephone consultations have been carried out since Medgate’s Telemedicine Centre opened for business in 2000. Today, some 100 Medgate medical professionals advise around 5,000 patients each day. In half those cases, a telephone consultation is sufficient, making a visit to a doctor unnecessary. In the other cases, the patients are referred to specialists, hospitals or medical centres.

Thanks to its telemedicine system, Medgate is able to prevent unnecessary medical examinations and maintain a consistent quality of medical care. Winning the award sends the signal that the concept is also suitable for Germany’s healthcare system.
