Headquartered in the St.GallenBodenseeArea, Bühler AG founded Bühler Insect Technology Solutions in collaboration with the Dutch company Protix. According to a statement, Bühler is a leading solution provider for the food and feed industry, while Protix is a leading insect production company.

“By combining the knowledge and experience of our two companies, we can provide industrial insect processing solutions to address the alternative protein market,” said Ian Roberts, CTO of Bühler.

The demand for protein will rise in the coming years. Nine billion people are expected to live on our planet by 2050. To feed them all in a sustainable way, we need more than 250 million tonnes of additional protein each year - an increase of 50 per cent compared to today’s level.

Protix, which was founded in 2009, breeds and rears insects in a bid to make a positive contribution to closing the future protein gap.

“Protix is the most advanced insect company that has demonstrated industrial-scale production in a way that is scalable and multipliable. They have proven how to create a market in insect protein,” said Roberts.

Bühler Insect Technologies is located in Liyang, China. It will develop industrial scale solutions for insect rearing and processing and will produce high-quality insect ingredients.
