Aurora Swiss Aerospace has recently made its headquarters in Lucerne. The company is an affiliate of Aurora Flight Sciences, headquartered in the state of Virginia (USA). Its business is the development of unmanned aircraft, commonly known as drones. Aurora is now working on a project that is not yet widely known: the company plans to introduce an unmanned solar aircraft to the US market by the end of 2017. The name of the client may not yet be disclosed.
When solar aircraft are mentioned in Switzerland, people immediately think of Bertrand Piccard’s Solar Impulse. And Aurora has actually poached some engineers from Solar Impulse in order to promote its own developments. But Solar Impulse is not a direct competitor as the Aurora solar aircraft will be unmanned.
