Taking all these categories into account, Switzerland has reached an outstanding fifth place. In the category for“human basic needs“ Switzerland shines in second place, just like last year. Only Denmark narrowly positioned itself in front of Switzerland. The overall winner and 2016’s most socially progressive country in the world is Finland.
In the category “water and sanitation”, Switzerland scored the highest score, with 99.96 out of a possible 100 points. Switzerland also proved to be a strong candidate in the subcategories of “accessibility of basic knowledge” and "personal freedom”, with over 95 points respectively.
The Social Progress Index analyzes over 140 countries and is published by the American companySocial Progress Imperative. Every year, the non-profit organization cooperates with the Harvard Business School and MIT, as well as numerous international organizations, in order to create the study.
