Switzerland tops the Global Innovation Index again

The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2015 was released today. Switzerland remains the undisputed leader for the fifth year in a row.

After five years, Switzerland still ranks first in the Global Innovation Index (GII). In the 2015 edition, the country performs particularly well in three areas; creative outputs, knowledge and technology outputs as well as business sophistication. Its overall score in the index is no less than 68.30/100, an outstanding result since the challenger, the United Kingdom, is lagging behind with a 62.42 grade.

Switzerland remains highly competitive when it comes to innovation quality, a critical dimension as per the co-authors of the GII 2015: "Innovation quality matters. Creating world class universities and investing in research is essential for staying ahead in the global race for successful innovation."

It seems European countries are still the most innovative since Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Sweden and the Netherlands come first, leaving the United States with only the fifth place.

The Global Innovation Index 2015 is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, an agency of the United Nations). The GII 2015 looks at “Effective Innovation Policies for Development” and shows new ways that emerging-economy policymakers can boost innovation and spur growth by building on local strengths and ensuring the development of a sound national innovation environment.
