Newsweek magazine from New York lists nine Swiss hospitals among the 250 best hospitals in the world. The fourth edition of its ranking list, “The World's Best Hospitals 2022”, includes a total of 2,200 institutes across 27 countries. Newsweek states in the introduction to the list that the aim of the study is to provide the best data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance across countries. The magazine worked with the German statistical database Statista on this publication.
The best-placed Swiss hospital is Lausanne University Hospital in 11th place. The introduction specifically mentions University Hospital Basel, which has made the biggest leap: from 35th place the previous year to 14th. University Hospital Zurich is ranked in 15th, while University Hospital Geneva comes in 32nd. Klinik Hirslanden Zurich made it to 144th place, with Claraspital in Basel at 148th. Furthermore, Clinique de La Source in Lausanne, Hirslanden Klinik Aarau, and Lindenhof Hospital in Bern are all rated between 151st and 250th.
Dr. Christoph Meier, Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at University Hospital Zurich is quoted in the introduction: “Many lessons could be learned from COVID, such as recognizing the efficacy of virtual meetings, valuing the importance of hospital hygiene and emphasizing the importance of generalists over siloed specialization. The biggest challenge was the joint setting of individual priorities for a common goal.”
The USA leads this list with 33 hospitals, followed by Germany with 14, Italy and France each with 10, and South Korea with 8. The top three places are held by American hospitals. The best hospital in Europe is Charité Berlin in 5th place.
