Turkey is investing billions in the construction of hospitals

The Turkish health sector is growing rapidly. Over the next few years, a total of 31 new city hospitals with around 43,500 beds will be created. They are being constructed within the scope of public-private partnerships, which opens up big business opportunities for contractors and high-tech companies.

Over the past six years, the health-sector spending by Turkish social insurance has more than doubled to 16.5 billion euros per year. More than half of this is being spent on hospital services. This is the background to the billions being invested in new hospitals.

According to the magazine “Nachrichten für Aussenhandel”, contracts with investors, consisting mainly of construction companies, have been signed for 21 of the 31 new hospitals. The construction of the other ten will be put out to tender by the Directorate General for Health Investments over the next few months

Opportunities for foreign high-tech companies

The commissioning of the clinics will also create a major demand for equipment, medical consumables, medical technology and hospital management expertise. Although the government wants a large share of this to be supplied by domestic producers and service providers, there will, however, be interesting supply opportunities for international suppliers of high-tech equipment.

According to Suhail el Obeid, Senior Consultant for Turkey at S-GE, there are several possibilities to get involved in the Turkish market: “Companies either participate directly in tenders, or we bring them together with OEMs. S-GE helps companies identify projects and establishes contacts,” says Suhail el Obeid.
