Length of Istanbul railway system will increase up to 454 kilometers

The railway system in Istanbul with a length of 233.05km is under construction and will reach - after being completed - a length of 454.75 kilometers. According to the information received from İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), within the framework of ‘‘Istanbul's Transport Master Plan’’ public transportation service is provided by rail system line that is 233.05 kilometers long as of today.

IMM is doing the construction of 12 lines of 140.9 kilometers; the General Directorate of Infrastructure connected to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is doing the construction of 4 lines with 80.8 kilometers length.

The construction of 221.7 kilometers of rail system lines, which are still in progress, will be completed by the end of 2023. With the commissioning of these lines and the addition of the existing 233,05 km section, the length of public transportation with metro system in Istanbul will reach 454.75 km.

Most of the metro works, all initiated by the previous administration, have come to the end. In both Kabataş-Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey Metro Line and Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey 1st stage, signal test drives have started. Following the completion of test drives with maximum safety, Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey section is planned to be commissioned at the beginning of 2020. The second stage, Kabataş-Mecidiyeköy line, is intended to be commissioned in 2021 with passengers.

Comissioning in three stages from 2019 - 2020

The signaled test and commissioning works of Eminönü-Alibeyköy Tram line are planned to be started at the end of 2019 and completed with maximum security and planned to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2020. Dudullu-Bostancı and Ataköy-İkitelli metro line, which are under construction, are expected to be opened in 2021. Rumelihisarüstü-Aşiyan Funicular line is planned to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2020.

New lines will be determined and the tender will start

In addition, as a result of the evaluations it is planned to determine the priority lines of the rail system metro lines to start the new tenders. The status of the railway system lines, which were tendered but stopped due to economic reasons, is being reviewed. These projects will be accelerated again within the framework of a new program.
