Food Challenge: Swiss products are on their way to the USA

16 Swiss food and beverage producers have made it: they are allowed to sell their products on the shelves of the supermarket chain Fairway Market for half a year. In addition to chocolate and cheese, Swiss jam, muesli and caviar are currently making their way to New York.

The two containers filled with Swiss food left the port of Basel on 8 of August and set off in the direction of Antwerp (Belgium). From there, they will travel across the Atlantic to New York, where the products are expected to arrive on 30 August 2017. The following products from these companies are on board:

  • Pasta products made from various beans: Edamama AG
  • Cheese: Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln AG
  • Cheese: Schweizer Alpkäse
  • Cheese: Real Swiss Cheese GmbH
  • Raclette: Seiler Käserei AG
  • Cheese knives: Victorinox AG
  • Caviar: Kasperskian AG
  • Specialty cake from Grisons: Marcel Schmid GmbH, La Conditoria
  • Jelly: Räber AG
  • Muesli: Steiner Mühle AG
  • Mostarda Purée: Sandro Vanini SA
  • Chocolate: Chocolat Stella Bernrain
  • Chocolate: Gysi AG Chocolatier Suisse
  • Chocolate waffles: Kägi Söhne AG
  • Mustard: Jamailah Switzerland AG
  • Lemonade: Gazzose Ticinesi SA

Once the food and drinks reach the US, they must pass customs. The decisive factors are that suppliers have correctly filled out the papers, can present a valid registration at the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and that foodstuffs are correctly labeled. Once the goods are approved, they will be taken to the Fairway Market warehouse and from there distributed to all 15 stores in and around New York.

Swiss products on the shelves from October

The sale of Swiss products in the USA will begin after the official opening ceremony on October 5. A great opportunity for Swiss suppliers, as Damian Felchlin, food expert at Switzerland Global Enterprise, explains: “In the first two weeks, product demos will be held in all stores. We recommend that suppliers get behind the demo tables and collect direct feedback from American customers. At the same time, suppliers have the opportunity to visit other supermarket chains and meet with potential partners.”

Fairway Market is selling these Swiss products as part of a week of promotion for Swiss products. The supermarket chain began to focus on European products last year, with a promotion for food from France.
