ABB unveiled the world’s first collaborative robot two years ago. Now, YuMi is being joined by the second family member. The new single-arm robot will be presented at the International Robotics Exhibition (iREX) 2017 from November 29 to December 2 in Tokyo.

The robot is designed to work alongside humans on factory assembly lines and to increase productivity. It will be officially launched in 2018.

Like YuMi, the new robot has a payload of 500 grams. However, it has only one arm and takes up less space, allowing it to be easily integrated into existing assembly lines.

YuMi exceeded ABB’s expectations, according to Sami Atiya, head of ABB’s Robotics and Motion division. ‘It can solve a Rubik’s Cube, make sushi, wrap gifts and conduct an orchestra,” he said, adding that he expects the new single-arm robot to be equally well received.

“The newest robot is a much anticipated addition to the ‘factory of the future’, enabling our customers to grow and thrive in the age of mass customization,” commented Per Vegard Nerseth, Managing Director of ABB Robotics.
