The new Center for Innovative Finance (CIF) is part of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Basel. According to a statement, the new research unit will allow the university to explore issues in areas such as fintech, digital banking and innovative finance. Its focus will be on the scientific analysis and practical implementation of blockchain projects, innovation financing and innovative financial solutions.

The CIF is the first of its kind in Switzerland with these focus areas. Overall, it will make an important contribution to the research and application of future-oriented technologies.

“We are currently witnessing one of the most spectacular competitions ever to have taken place in monetary policy and the financial sector. Politics, business and science are struggling to keep up with the rapid developments,” Aleksander Berentsen, a member of the centre’s governing body, said in an article in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Credit Suisse will finance a five-year assistant professorship in blockchain technology with a total of 1.3 million Swiss francs. According to the article, the agreement between the bank and the centre guarantees “unrestricted teaching and research freedom”.
