The University Hospital Basel and Claraspital announced in July that they would establish a centre for patients with abdominal disorders. Just six months later, the Clarunis centre opened its doors on 7 January to treat patients with abdominal diseases or injuries.

According to a joint press release from the two partners, Clarunis will “by far be the most important health care provider for visceral surgery and gastroenterology far beyond the Basel region”. By combining their strengths, the partners will increase the number of patients they can treat, which will have a positive effect on the quality of treatment, training and research, as well as on opportunities to specialize in the abdominal region.

Clarunis will also conduct “internationally competitive, cutting-edge research”. It will focus its research on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, viral hepatitis, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic surgery. In addition, a new research group focusing on tumours of the gastrointestinal tract will be established at the Department of Biomedicine.

The cooperation between the public University Hospital and Basel's largest non-profit private hospital Claraspital is a “role model” for the whole of Switzerland.
