Switzerland honored as Innovation Champion

A new ranking presented at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas rates Switzerland as the world’s number two for innovation. The country scored particularly well for freedom, adaptability and internet speed.

Switzerland earned the ranking of "Innovation Champion" for strong economic conditions and a regulatory framework that nurtures innovation.

Last week, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was held in Las Vegas, with Switzerland taking part for the first time. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), CES is the world's gathering place for innovators and breakthrough technologies, showcasing more than 3,900 exhibiting companies.

At the CES, Switzerland was honored as the world's number two for innovation, just behind Estonia. Following behind Switzerland were Finland, the US, Singapore and the UK. The EU made it to position 22.

A regulatory framework that spurs innovation

The Innovation Scorecard of CES grades 61 countries and the European Union across 25 indicators that spur innovation. In the 2019 Scorecard, Switzerland earned the ranking of "Innovation Champion" for strong economic conditions, a regulatory framework that nurtures innovation and embracing an open society.

Out of 14 different categories examined in the ranking list, Switzerland scored top for:

- availability of fast internet
- adaptability
- quality of air and drinking water

The country also received good points for:
- diversity
- civil and political freedom
- entrepreneurial activities
- research spending
- options for short-term renting
- advances in the area of autonomous vehicles
