Swiss companies are among the most innovative in the world. This is according to the tenth edition of the Clarivate rankings of the 100 most innovative companies, which has now been published by the Philadelphia-based analysis firm. With ABB, Novartis and Roche all making the list, Switzerland again has three firms in the rankings. Moreover, another company headquartered in Schaffhausen, namely TE Connectivity, was also represented in the rankings, although its business activities are focused on the USA.
Roche one of the most innovative right from the start
Roche has been ranked as one of the 100 most innovative companies in each year since the rankings were first published back in 2012. Since 2015, Novartis has likewise made the list on a consistent basis. In addition to the two Basel-based firms, just four other companies operating in the pharma industry have made the list. Three of these are from the USA, with the remaining firm based in Germany. Zurich-based ABB, a leading global technology company, has formed part of this elite club in five of the ten years, including both 2020 and 2021.
Switzerland is well represented
With three domestic companies represented in the rankings, Switzerland is on a level footing with countries such as Germany and France. The list now features as many as four Chinese firms, while the UK and Canada each have just a single company in the rankings. The Netherlands can boast two representatives. The heavyweights of the rankings are the USA and Japan, with 42 and 29 companies making the list respectively. Electronics and computer equipment is the most important industry for the rankings, with 21 companies operating in this sector. Moreover, the list contains 12 companies from the semiconductor industry.
Clarivate selects the companies for its rankings on the basis of the number of submitted and accepted patent applications, the influence of these patents on other companies and organizations, and by investment in innovation and commercialization activities.
