Eye surgery start-up Optimo Medical secures an additional CHF 1.8 million

Medtech company Optimo Medical has obtained more funds in a growth financing round to expand its product portfolio in eye surgery planning.

Optimeyes Technology
Optimo Medical has built a steady reputation as the leading company in the field of virtual clinical trials for the anterior eye segment and is a recognized global technology leader in patient-specific astigmatism management.

With its flagship product Optimeyes, Optimo Medical uses accurate eye measurements to create a digital copy of the patient’s eye inside the computer. With this so-called digital twin, the software then carries out a virtual eye surgery and, prior to the actual surgery, calculates the optimal parameters for each individual eye. By doing so, a superior clinical outcome is actively supported. Every year about 30 million cataract surgeries are performed across the globe with the majority requiring a correction of astigmatism.

The CE-certified and clinically validated Optimeye technology is based on patient-specific biomechanical simulations and has the potential to serve the needs in ophthalmic procedures, beyond cataract surgery. Several areas have been identified by the team and collaborating experts and defining the requirements has already begun.

Thanks to the newly raised growth capital from existing and undisclosed new shareholders, the Biel/Bienne-based start-up is well-positioned to expand its digital twin technology to other application fields while continuing to pursue its mission to fight astigmatism.

A technology with already widely recognized potential

According to Harald Studer, co-founder and CEO of Optimo Medical, customers, partners, and shareholders that support the Optimeyes technology have recognized its potential. Earlier this year, Optimo entered a partnership with computer simulation leader Ansys to further develop its products.

“We are only at the beginning of what the Optimeyes simulation technology can do for surgeons and patients worldwide. With our compelling digital twin technology, and together with our customers, we are capable of delivering on our promises”, says Studer. “In order to augment and broaden our product portfolio, business activities and talent recruitment to strengthen the development team in Biel (canton of Bern) will soon be started.”
