Name change: Turkey becomes Türkiye

Since December 2021, it has been known that Turkey wishes to change its English name internationally. The United Nations have confirmed this change, the country will be called Türkiye in international usage from now on. In our report, you can find out more about the impacts of this change for Swiss companies with respect to the movement of goods.

Flag Turkey

The name change is official, and all Turkish ministries and the Investment Office are already using the term “Türkiye.” It is clear that the name of the country changed in English. However, it is not evident whether the German name will change too. To date, only one decree from the Turkish President has been published. No specific guidelines have been issued as yet.

Labeling of Turkish products

Export products from Turkey are being labeled with “Made in Türkiye” with immediate effect. But it is still unclear whether this also affects goods that have already been exported and that are in storage in Switzerland.

Products that have been labeled with “Made in Turkey” and that are still in warehouses can currently be exported until further instructions are provided by the ministry. However, it is recommended that developments with respect to labeling be monitored with local business partners.

Our consultancy service and the Swiss Business Hub Türkiye is available to assist you at any time with questions concerning the Turkish market.
