Headquartered in Frauenfeld in the canton of Thurgau, Swiss Clean Battery AG (SCB) is building the first gigafactory for pure solid-state batteries, further details of which can be found in a press release. These are considered to be the successor technology to conventional lithium-ion batteries. SCB’s solid-state battery is described as extremely durable, non-flammable and 50 percent better in terms of its environmental balance than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Swiss Clean Battery AG, which was only founded on March 16 according to the Thurgau commercial register office, states that it has acquired the license from the development company HPB AG, based in Teufen in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, to manufacture the batteries in its role as a production company. Roland Jung has been appointed as CEO of SCB, while Peter Koch and Thomas Lützenrath will perform the roles of CFO and COO respectively. The purpose of the company is to set up and operate gigafactories for solid-state batteries around the world. According to the press release, the company will serve both the Swiss domestic market and the international market with its range of sustainable battery storage systems from 2024 onwards.

According to information from the newly established company, it is planning the gradual construction of a production facility with capacity of 1.2 gigawatt hours. One gigawatt hour is equal to one million kilowatt hours. Planned revenue amounts to 318 million Swiss francs, with an investment volume totaling 246 million Swiss francs. SCB AG expects to employ a workforce of 181 staff to begin with, while the corporate value of the company is estimated at 1.3 billion Swiss francs.

In the final phase, SCB expects to produce 7.6 gigawatt hours, with an investment volume of 775 million Swiss francs, sales of roughly 2 billion Swiss francs and 1,061 employees.

Details on the construction of the gigafactory are to be presented by the company during a press conference scheduled for April 6 in Zurich.
