The Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) is the first Swiss university to launch an interdisciplinary LowCodeLab. According to a press release, OST is making it possible for small and medium-sized companies and also organizations in areas such as healthcare and the public sector to develop their own, customized programs. Rather than developing a program with thousands of lines of code, software can be independently created without any prior programming knowledge using the building blocks. This process is also referred to as citizen development. OST will reportedly be supporting the targeted use of such low code or no code platforms in a lighthouse project.
This is in line with a current trend in digitalization, which the U.S. market research institute Forrester predicted would be worth US$21 billion in 2022.
“The actual program code necessary for the application to work is automatically generated by the low code platform. With a little work, this app can then be rolled out and made available on different end devices,” explained Christoph Baumgarten, lecturer in Information Systems at OST.
The LowCodeLab will reportedly raise the profile of low code through events in Switzerland and the German-speaking region, encourage collaborative research and bring business and science together.
So far, partnerships have been agreed with adesso and MINT Process Solutions. MINT was founded by graduates of OST.
