The ETH has taken ninth place in the new QS World University Ranking. This makes it the best university in continental Europe for the 15th time in a row. However, it has slipped down one place versus the previous year.
Above all, the ETH owes its good placing to its international alignment, the large number of citations from research publications, and its good reputation in academia and the economy. The university scored 93.6 out of a potential 100 points in the overall assessment.
EPFL is second-best university in Switzerland
Other Swiss universities featured prominently in the ranking list. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) took 16th place with a total of 89.2 points, having been 14th the previous year. Similar to the ETH, the EPFL did well with its international orientation in particular, for which it received the maximum score. It also performed well with regard to quotations.
The University of Zurich is the third-best university in Switzerland. Globally, it comes in 83rd place with a total of 63.7 points after sitting at 70th last year. The top 200 universities also include other Swiss institutes: the University of Bern (120th place), the University of Geneva (125th place), and the University of Basel (136th place).
MIT retains top position
For the eleventh time in a row, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA came in first place. The University of Cambridge in England took second place, while third place was assigned to Stanford University in America.
The QS ranking is based on the results of surveys on university quality completed by researchers and employers. It also takes into account statistics on specialist publications, for example.
