The Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie has inaugurated its new UX-Lab, which is located on the school’s campus in Neuchâtel. Intended for students and researchers as well as for the regional industry, this user experience research laboratory aims to improve the design of products and services to better meet the expectations of their future users.

A UX-Lab (UX = user experience) is a user testing laboratory. Through different scenarios, it allows to reveal and evaluate the experience resulting from an interaction between a product or a service and its user.

Consisting of an isophonic observation room, with one-way glass, and a test room, equipped with motorized cameras and microphones, the UX-Lab allows the implementation of various usage scenarios, and features equipment in the areas of eye tracking, virtual reality and biometric sensors.

The UX-Lab is managed by engineers from the HE-Arc’s User Centered Product Design competency group, whose objective is to design physical or digital products that meet users’ expectations ever better.

These expectations are not only related to the functional qualities of the product (its usability) but also to more subjective factors, such as the aesthetics or the values it conveys. Ultimately, the work contributes to making the product more attractive to future customers (meaning better sales), more intuitive to use (meaning less training costs) and less expensive to produce (meaning fewer “unsuitable” products).

A laboratory open to institutions and companies from the region

The UX Lab is also at the disposal of the region’s industrial stakeholders. Companies and other institutions can come and test their products or services under the expert eye of HE-Arc specialists.

Indeed, they offer their services either in the form of direct mandates or short training sessions that allow companies and other institutions to perform these tests themselves at the UX-Lab in Neuchâtel.
