The Emmi Group believes it is on track to achieve its sustainability targets. In the current Sustainability Report 2021/22, the group points to a positive overall development, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the Lucerne-based milk processing firm. Emmi recorded progress in particular in the development of its own staff, towards implementing sustainable dairy operations, and in the reduction of greenhouse gases and waste.
Three out of four employees in Switzerland currently have a development plan in place, and almost half of staff have one at a global level. Greenhouse gas emissions in 2021/22 were down by 10 percent on the previous year. Waste and food waste were cut by 4 and 5 percent respectively. However, the group has identified a need for action with regard to water intensity and the recyclability of packaging.
In partnership with the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL) at Bern University of Applied Sciences and in consultation with the WWF, Emmi has developed a science-based criteria catalog for sustainable milk, which is intended to make the sustainability of milk measurable and verifiable. The group has also joined the carbon-neutral dairy farming initiative Pathways to Dairy Net Zero. The number of milk suppliers with production processes that comply with the Sustainable Swiss Milk industry standard also increased in the year under review.
For the current year, Emmi intends to increasingly focus its activities on areas such as energy, decarbonization and cutting greenhouse gases. The group is particularly keen to diversify its energy supply by increasing the share of renewable energies.
