Amazon builds data business in Zurich

The American mail-order firm Amazon has launched a company in Switzerland. Headquartered in Zurich, the new Amazon Data Services provides services connected to the Amazon data cloud.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) opened an office in Zurich’s Sihlcity in the spring. On 20th July, Amazon founded its Amazon Data Services, which is headquartered in Zurich, according to an article in newspaper “Handelszeitung”.

The aim is to expand services for Swiss companies and international customers, with the new company offering services for using and analysing large quantities of data in the Amazon data cloud, explained the article.

The location of Zurich will grow in importance as the company expands, added the article, going on to suggest that Switzerland could become Amazon’s next regional location in Europe. To date, the U.S. mail-order company has regional offices in cities including Frankfurt and Dublin. In 2017, it will open one in Great Britain.

“AWS customers can currently choose from 13 global regions,” highlighted Amazon spokesperson Robert Belle. Because the region has several data centres, an AWS data centre will soon be an option in Switzerland.
