Equinix has completed the expansion of its data centre ZH5 in Oberengstringen. The centre grew by 900 square metres and acquired 280 cabinets, announced the platform inside.it. The interconnectivity services provider invested a total of USD 18 million in the expansion.
ZH5 opened in 2013 and covers a surface area of around 6700 square metres. It is connected to Equinix’s other Zurich data centres – ZH1, ZH2 and ZH4 – via a glass fibre pipeline. With two more data centres in Geneva, Equinix serves around 90 per cent of Switzerland’s internet traffic, commented Roger Semprini, managing director of Equinix Switzerland, in an article on computerworld.ch.
Semprini also revealed that more expansion plans for ZH5 are in the offing. Set to develop on the site of the former flower market are additional processing spaces, which will amount to around three times the size of the current data centre. The excess heat generated could be used to heat surrounding houses and a nearby swimming pool, according to Semprini.
