Switzerland’s system of higher education has again achieved top spots in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject. Earth and marine sciences at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich was ranked the best in the world. The university is also among the top ten universities in ten other subjects: it came in fifth place for architecture as well as engineering and technology, sixth for environmental studies and natural sciences, eight for mathematics, ninth for computer science and information systems, and tenth for biological studies, civil and structural engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, physics and astronomy, as well as statistics.
While ETH Zurich has a strong performance in technology and engineering subjects, other Swiss universities stood out for top achievements in hotel management studies. Three Swiss institutes were among the top ten universities in this subject: Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (2nd place), Les Roches International School of Hotel Management (4th place) and the Swiss Hotel Management School (8th place). Only the US performed better, with four of its universities among the top ten. This was the first year that the QS subject ranking assessed hospitality and leisure management subjects.
This was also the first time that the subject anatomy/physiology was ranked. The University of Zurich came in 20th here.
