Evolva manufactures ingredients that offer considerable advantages, but they are used to only a limited extent because they are difficult to procure. According to a statement, one of the most important ingredients that the Swiss companies works with is the sweetener stevia. Evolva and the US food company Cargill have an exclusive collaboration on the production and commercialisation of stevia sweeteners by fermentation.
The patent, which Evolva expects will be granted in early 2017, protects key steps in the production of stevia glycosides Reb A, Reb D and Reb M by a number of production methods, including fermentation and bioconversion. Evolva claims to be the first company “to identify and characterise the enzymes for key steps in the Reb A, Reb D and Reb M biosynthesis pathways”.
The patent covers the most commercially viable production method for manufacturing what Evolva calls the “best-tasting steviol glycosides”.
