Istanbul: underwater tunnel across the Golden Horn

The city of Istanbul is opening a tender to build an underwater tunnel that crosses the Golden Horn, connecting up the districts of Fatih and Beyoglu.
Golden Horn, Istanbul (Waterway)
Istanbul is planning to build a water tunnel under the Golden Horn.

The focus will be on building an underwater tunnel that is 900 meters long, 8.5 meters under water and has six lanes for road traffic. It should be possible to realise the project within 700 days. In addition to building the underwater tunnel, this also involves taking down the Atatürk bridge over the Golden Horn, building the so-called “floating piers”, which open and close for shipping in the Golden Horn and creating green areas and restructuring individual historical buildings in the catchment area of the planned tunnel.

Almost concurrently with this, the Istanbul municipal government has also announced the tender for building eight new metro lines totalling 100 kilometers and an underwater tunnel for foot passengers.
