Rexam, one of the world’s largest can makers, has opened its first production plant in Switzerland in Widnau in the canton of St.Gallen. The plant will have a capacity to produce 2.2 billion cans per year and will employ around 240 people, writes Rexam in a news release. It is located alongside a can filling plant operated by Rauch Trading, an Austrian company that has been filling aluminium cans since 2005 for the Austrian energy drink manufacturer Red Bull. Rexam writes that its wall-to-wall operations will significantly reduce the associated transport costs, regional traffic and CO2 emissions.
The company invested around CHF 180 million into constructing the manufacturing plant. “Rexam is proud to have built this plant in the canton of St.Gallen, Switzerland and to welcome Widnau to our worldwide network,” said Rexam’s Chief Executive Graham Chipchase.
