Swatch Group launches the world’s smallest Bluetooth chip

The surface of the new tiny integrated circuit – which measures only five square millimeters – is packed with five million transistors.

EM MicroelectronicSwatch Group R&D and the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) have launched the smallest low-energy Bluetooth chip on the market, designed to improve the autonomy of connected objects.

The ultra-miniaturization of electronic components is crucial for the densification of functions in portable electronic devices and for the Internet of Things, Swatch explained in a press release. Its high-speed start-up capability and low energy consumption standards are unparalleled. The chip meets the latest Bluetooth standard, version 5.0. As a comparison, iPhone 7 uses version 4.2.

Swatch Group and CSEM – both among the world leaders in circuits and systems with very low energy consumption, as well as in technologies adapted to the Internet of Things – are long-term partners. Last month, they announced that they were working on the development of a unique Swiss-made platform for small connected objects and more particularly watches, to be built around a tailor-made operating system.
