Incepto Medical: "We believed that in Switzerland we could find complementary people to strengthen our teams."

Incepto Medical is a Paris-based company that co-creates and distributes AI apps for medical imaging. Their goal is to be the “Netflix of medical imaging” at a European level. To intensify their partnership with the Swiss imaging company 3R and to have access to the ecosystem, the successful start-up has set up office in the Canton of Vaud this year.

Incepto Medical develops a medical imaging platform intended to distribute AI algorithms for radiology. Its platform specializes in the production of various artificial intelligence-based tools such as chest X-ray, mammograms screening and automated pulmonary nodule management applications, enabling physicians and data scientists to create the tools for patient care.

Created in January 2018, the start-up is the result of a meeting between radiologist Gaspard d'Assignies, Florence Moreau, an engineer who worked for General Electric (GE), and Antoine Jomier, former director of GE Healthcare. It is based in Paris and currently has 47 employees.

Availability of talent and doorway to Europe

When Incepto Medical discussed where to set up its first subsidiary, Switzerland seemed the most natural decision: For its proximity to France but also for its ecosystem. “Switzerland has a huge talent pool to offer, be it through universities, companies, or research centers”, states Mathieu Ficara, Admin and Finance Leader of Incepto Medical. “Our company is evolving very quickly, and we have a significant need for talent. We believed that in Switzerland we could find complementary people to strengthen our teams.”

Switzerland is the first step in the company’s European strategy, according to Ficara: “We want to confirm if we can duplicate the ‘Incepto France’ model. This would then allow us to access new markets bordering Switzerland, such as Italy, Germany, or Austria.”

Co-creating within the Swiss ecosystem

Incepto Medical is co-developing AI software with the Swiss imaging group 3R (Réseau Radiologique Romand) to detect, localize, and characterize knee MRI pathologies (K3ROS Project). 3R is an independent Swiss radiological network with more than 160 health professionals that stretches from Sion to Geneva. Its local medical imaging centers and institutions are all linked with a unique computer system allowing teleradiology in real time as well as the electronic and automatic distribution of images and reports to prescribers.

The successful collaboration with 3R drew Incepto Medical to the Canton of Vaud, close to important research partners such as the Geneva University Hospital and Lausanne University. Furthermore, the geographical position allows the company to be in the center of the French-speaking area while still being in a good position to tackle the German-speaking market in a next step.

Helpful support during the pandemic

When the company decided to open office in Switzerland, the current pandemic made travelling or visiting different cantons in person impossible. Having close contact with both the representatives of each canton and the Swiss Business Hub France was thus perceived as very helpful by Ficara: “We were very well supported and advised by the Swiss Business Hub France. We had regular updates and debriefings on the various exchanges with the cantons.”

Incepto Medical now focuses on stabilizing and expanding its business team and then continuing its collaborations with the Swiss ecosystem, whether through the co-development of AI solutions or the integration of new Swiss solutions on its distribution platform. In the future, the company plans to hire a dozen employees.
