Highly-skilled workforce

The world’s largest machine tool manufacturer, DMG MORI, moves its new head offices to Switzerland. The main reasons for choosing Switzerland and Winterthur were the available area, the good infrastructure, the easily accessible airport as well as the technical colleges and a highly-skilled workforce.

Success Story

DMG MORI, the world’s largest machine tool manufacturer, builds its new head offices on the «Sulzer Allee» in Winterthur. Following the groundbreaking ceremony on October 1, 2013, which marked the official start of construction, the excavators have since started work. Over an area of 21.000 square metres, DMG MORI SEIKI Europe AG – under the new sales and service brand DMG MORI – shall supervise 17 country subsidiaries and 950 employees all across Europe from Scandinavia to Italy. Silvio Lehmann, CEO of DMG MORI SEIKI Europe AG, emphasises the fact that the proximity to the industry in Winterthur was crucial in terms of the choice of location. The main reasons for choosing Switzerland and Winterthur were the available area, the good infrastructure, the easily accessible airport as well as the technical colleges which indeed promise an active technology transfer and a highly-skilled workforce.

International, national, regional and local promotion activities

Finalising the location of DMG MORI in the Winterthur region is one of the largest and most important projects during the twenty year history of the city’s promotion activities: DMG MORI invests more than 40 million euros and creates approximately 200 new jobs. In cooperation with the City of Winterthur, the Business and Economic Development Division of the Canton of Zurich, the Swiss Business Hub Japan of Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) and the property owner and project developer Implenia, the Location Promotion Winterthur Region has been devoted to this project for the past two years.

According to Roger Zbinden, Head of the Swiss Business Hub Japan in Tokyo, the Swiss Business Hub Japan made a significant contribution to the choice of location due to the fact that the decisions in the background were indeed made in Japan: «In April 2011, initial talks were held with the managing director of MORI, Dr Masahiko Mori, at the headquarters in Nagoya, Japan, in order to present Switzerland as a potential location.» Along with the aforementioned locational advantages, the professional local support in Japan as well as in all departments involved in Winterthur and the Canton of Zurich were further reasons for choosing the «Sulzer Allee» as the new location.

The proximity to the industry as well as the infrastructure and the professional support on all levels were crucial for the choice of location.
