Brazil

Brazil Country Information

Despite some political and economic crises, the largest country in South American remains an interesting export destination for Swiss SMEs. Brazil is the world's seventh-largest economy and very well-connected to other Latin American countries.

Together with the Swiss Economic Institute at the ETH Zurich, S-GE has created a ranking of the top export markets. It shows which markets are particularly attractive for Swiss SMEs.

With its 200 million inhabitants and a rapidly-expanding middle class, Brazil is an interesting market for Swiss companies. Long-term planning, the right choice of business partner and the support of local experts are of fundamental importance. Brazil may not be quite there yet, but it is nonetheless the largest and most important market in Latin America. A market that has a lot of catching up to do, in particular in terms of infrastructure, but which still has a rather free-spending middle class. Entry to this market requires a lot of patience due to the bureaucratic procedures involved. Customs requirements are also complicated. Increasingly, however, barriers to trade are being removed.

Many Swiss companies which export to Brazil come from the following industries:

  • chemicals and pharmaceuticals
  • machines, appliances, electronics
  • precision instruments, watches and jewelery

Swiss companies have a positive reputation. Especially in large cities such as Rio de Janeiro or  São Paulo, high-quality products and Swiss luxury brands are in high demand.
