Insights into a complex and unique system that offers a range of opportunities for Swiss exporters
Japan and Switzerland are both countries with a dense and extensive public transportation network. In particular, the technology used to connect cities, people and businesses via railway is state of the art and both industries strive for continuous innovation. This visible dedication creates various opportunities for collaboration on both sides. In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the Japanese railway system, its unique features, discuss the impact of Covid-19 on its industry structure and provide Swiss exporters with tips on how to tackle the Japanese railway market.
The Japanese railway system is unique in many different ways
First, it is passenger-oriented -- it enjoys nearly 30 per cent of modal split in the passenger transport market, which is the highest among countries with advanced railway systems. Second, it is owned and operated by "vertically integrated" railway enterprises, which own everything from the railway tracks including bridges, tunnels, power supply and signaling to the rolling stock and their maintenance depots (some companies even integrate vehicle manufacturing as well). These unique features result in different cultures and styles in how railways are operated in the country. However, we do see some signs for change of the industry structure in the future. The COVID-19 pandemic has also left a significant impact, but how the Japanese railway industry will change to cope with the post-pandemic situation remains to be seen.
