Breakout Session A2: Sustainable Building

March 16, 2022 / 11.45 -13.15 EDT (Ottawa), 16.45 -18.15 CET (Bern)

The breakout session on Sustainable Building will concentrate on the technical advances that help evolve the role of the built environment to become more resilient to changing climate and climatic events, transform the built environment from consumer into a source of energy and to reduce the impact of buildings. The session will cover improvements in sustainability of buildings with the perspective of both new constructions as well as retrofits. This will include the materials and techniques used, the technical elements that form part of the buildings and the aspects of design that are ultimately important as well.

This session looks at state-of-the-art and latest developments in Switzerland and Canada that contribute to reducing the impact of buildings on the environment, making them contribute to future sustainable solutions. Innovative Canadian and Swiss companies will present their pitches in order to highlight the contribution of materials, the techniques used and the impact of design on the performance of the building. The session will include presentations of developments from Canadian and Swiss companies, from research institutions and of innovative developments.

Technologies included in this session are:

  • Building materials and techniques
  • Technical elements (heating, ventilation, cooling, etc.)
  • Design and performance (energy supply and storage, mutualization of services, etc.)

Smart Living Lab

Speaker: Prof. Corentin Fivet, Head of Structural Xploration Lab (SXL)

Uniting architecture and structural design, the Structural Xploration Lab is paving the way for the upcycling reuse of load-bearing components in buildings, hence contributing to the adoption of a circular economy by the construction industry. In particular, it has developed algorithms to optimize the assignment of reused members in new structures and demonstrated the potential of key waste for new load-bearing applications. The lab also holds a patent for a highly-versatile slab-and-column systems for circular buildings with high transformation rates.

Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH)

Speaker: Christoph Renfer, Professor for Fire Protection

The UAS Bern’s core competencies include continuing education, research and development and consulting services, which result in degree programs, based on the economics needs.  The institute for Timber construction, Structures and Architecture conducts research into innovative, resource-conserving and energy-efficient buildings, and support you from the building design phase through to construction and redevelopment.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts

Speaker: Sina Büttner, Research Associate

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts / Institute of Building Technology and Energy Sustainable construction is a core element of the national Energy Strategy 2050. The Institute of Building Technology and Energy teaches and conducts research in energy- and material efficient, comfortable, functional and safe buildings for a sustainable building stock.

Implenia Schweiz AG

Speaker: Samuel Jordi, Real Estate Product Development

As Switzerland’s leading multinational construction and real estate service provider, Implenia develops and builds homes, workplaces and infrastructure. It realises complex projects and provides customer-centric support across the entire life-cycle of a building or structure. It focuses on customer needs, innovation and on striking a sustainable balance between commercial success as well as social and environmental responsibility.

Neustark

Speaker: Lisa Braune, Environmental Performance Manager

Neustark provides negative emission solutions, including the construction and implementation of the mineralization plants (core technology) at concrete recyclers. The mineralization plant sequesters permanently biogenic CO2 in crushed demolition concrete. Besides installing the mineralization plant, neustark runs the whole value chain from CO2 liquefaction to transport of CO2 as well as monitoring the climate impact of the process.

Timber Structures 3.0 AG

Speaker: Stefan Zöllig, VRP

With Timber Structures 3.0 technology, timber components made of solid, glulam or cross-laminated timber can be joined at the end faces. This makes it possible to create point-supported, multi-axis load-bearing panels or folded structures of any shape and size. This opens up constructive and design worlds that were previously inaccessible to timber construction.
