The V4 goes nuclear

The development of nuclear energy in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary

The V4 countries are carrying out major nuclear energy investments. This creates opportunities for engineering and construction companies, as well as those involved in managing nuclear projects and sites.

Nuclear Energy

This report offers an insight into the ongoing and planned nuclear energy projects in the V4 group. Poland is developing its nuclear sector from scratch, which requires a huge amount of funding and new infrastructure. It aims at three nuclear sites (two reactors each). The first one will be connected to the grid in 2033. In addition, Polish energy-intensive companies are set to invest in small modular reactors. Czech Republic has recently launched a tender for the construction of the fifth unit at the Dukovany nuclear plant. Three bidders are competing for Polish and Czech markets – the US’ Westinghouse, Korea’s KHNP and France’s EDF. Slovakia commissioned a new reactor at the Mochovce plant in January 2023. That will lift the share of nuclear power in its energy mix to 65%. Another reactor will be ready there most likely in 2024. Finally, Hungary carries out a nuclear power program expanding the four-unit plant in Paks in cooperation with Russian Rosatom.
