Health functional food in demand in South Korea

The market for “health functional foods”, which is an official term to refer to health and dietary supplements approved by the Ministry of Food & Drug Safety, is one of the fastest-growing food business sectors in South Korea, owing to a rise in health awareness and an aging population. Our fact sheet shows where Swiss producers can make their mark.

The outbreak of COVID-19 heightened consumer interest in enhancing their health and immune system, and this trend has boosted sales of these products. In 2021, the market for health functional foods in South Korea reached KRW 5.3 billion with a 20% growth year-on-year, according to the Korea Health Supplements Association.

More health-conscious consumers – how can Swiss suppliers benefit?

The association attributed this growth to an increase in health-conscious consumers amid a global pandemic, and new releases of diverse brands. In 2022, Korean households spent an average of KRW 360,000 (CHF 267) on health functional foods, and 8 out of 10 households purchased such products at least once a year. Red ginseng, vitamins, probiotics, edible oils containing EPA and DHA (a.k.a. omega-3), and fat reducing pills and drinks were the top five best-selling items in 2022.
