Behind the Meter: New Business Models in Japan

The Japanese government is planning to use all the tools at its disposal in its ongoing drive to increase the penetration of solar and wind generation in its power mix. This includes demand side response (DSR), which can reduce or even reverse demand during periods of high prices by using generation, storage, and consumption assets that are physically behind the power meters.

There are already several Japanese companies providing DSR options in the form of small solar PV, batteries, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) solutions. Some of them also offer energy management services to their clients. A few projects to aggregate assets from low voltage customers are emerging ahead of future monetization opportunities.

In our report, you will learn more about:

  • POLICIES SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT AND UTILIZATION OF BEHIND-THE-METER ASSETS
  • CURRENT PLAYERS AND PROJECTS
  • AREAS OF OPPORTUNITIES
