E-commerce in Austria

In Austria, some 10.4 billion euros of retail-relevant consumer spending by private households was attributable to distance selling in 2020 (spending on online retail and mail order purchases) out of total spending of approximately €74 billion. The main sales channel for distance selling is online shopping, increasingly including smartphone shopping. Our article tells you everything you need to know about e-commerce in Austria.

Between 2010 and 2019, distance selling expenditures ranged between 9% and 11% of total. The non-percentage figure in euros rose continuously on increasing consumer spending (2010: €5 billion, 2019 €8.1 billion). A significant rise was recorded in the last two years as compared to the years before, reflecting changing purchasing behavior and the accessing of new customer groups in the Corona pandemic . Steady growth in the sector offers Swiss SMEs various opportunities to gain a foothold in the Austrian market via e-commerce.
