Under the second Trump administration, the US government has adopted extensive changes to tariffs. This article provides a concise overview of the relevant tariff increases for Swiss exporters.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court decision that classified the reciprocal tariffs as unlawful, new temporary additional duties of 10% on imports from all countries (except those covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement) were introduced under Section 122 as of February 24, 2026. Goods listed in Annex II are exempt from these duties.

Additional duties on steel and aluminum, as well as their derivatives and derived products, entered into force on March 12, 2025. No exemptions are foreseen for these duties.

On April 3, 2025, a new US tariff of 25% on all imported vehicles came into force. In addition, the announced 25% tariff on auto parts became effective on May 3, 2025. Goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are exempt from the new tariffs on cars and auto parts.

Effective November 1, 2025, additional import duties will apply to medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles (MHDVs), their vehicle parts (MHDVPs) and buses (HTSUS 8702). It amends and expands Proclamations 10908 (auto parts) and 10925 (auto parts).
USMCA exception: Canadian and Mexican trucks receive duty relief; buses are excluded.
On August 1, 2025, additional tariffs of 50% on copper and derivatives came into force.

On April 2, 2025, known as “Liberation Day”, the US government introduced reciprocal tariffs. The aim of this measure is to ensure equal treatment in trade and reduce the existing trade deficit.
Following the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that reciprocal tariffs were unlawful, these tariffs have been repealed by executive order with effect from February 24, 2026. This ruling is binding.
Since August 29, 2025, imported goods from all countries that are not shipped through the international postal system, have a value of USD 800 or less, and would have previously fallen under the de minimis exception will be subject to all applicable customs duties.

The duty-free de minimis rule for shipments of goods originating in China was abolished on 2 May 2025.
The current additional duties can be accessed at any time in the customs database. Updates are generally made on the effective date, but may be delayed by up to one business day in the case of short-notice changes.
