CITES

The species of fauna and flora affected by these regulations can be found in the checklist of CITES species. The regulations also apply to products made from the species of fauna and flora in the CITES checklist, such as musical instruments made of protected wood or watch straps made of leather from protected animals.

Import

An appropriate import permit is required from the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (Bundesamt für Lebensmittelsicherheit und Veterinärwesen BLV) for the import of protected species. In the case of commercial trade in the affected products, it is possible to apply for a long-term permit so that a new permit does not have to be obtained every time. Inventory control, however, must be carried out. A CITES export permit, issued by the relevant enforcement authority of the country of origin, must be submitted in order to obtain the appropriate permit. Export

The import conditions of the destination country always apply. These can be found in our free customs database (see under Import Formalities). A certificate issued by the BLV is also required when exporting or reexporting products which are subject to the CITES provisions. The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) is responsible for shipments of plants not subject to the CITES provisions.
