BIS Certificiation in India: Scheme X abolished

Compiled by Swiss Business Hub India

Feb 5, 2026

The Indian Ministry of Heavy Industries has officially announced the permanent abolition of the BIS certification requirement under Scheme X. This means that products previously covered by Scheme X can now be exported to India without BIS certification. The official government notification confirming this decision is available here.

What does this mean for your business?

Swiss exporters can export to the Indian market without additional certification requirements under Scheme X. However, Scheme I remains in force. Some products may still fall under Scheme I and therefore require BIS certification. Scheme I covers over 680 products across 90+ product categories. We recommend carefully reviewing your product classification to ensure continued compliance with Indian regulations.

If you are unsure whether your products fall under Scheme I or require BIS certification, please contact us for individual guidance and clarification.
