The Digital Product Passport creates more transparency and supports the circular economy. It bundles information on origin, materials, safety, repairability, and recyclability. It will be made mandatory for certain product groups in stages – initially including batteries.

What is the digital product passport?

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital source of information associated with a product (and its components and materials, if applicable). The aim is to provide structured access to relevant product data to improve the traceability of sustainability, support the circular economy (repair, reuse, recycling), and facilitate compliance with legal requirements. The DPP is intended to provide transparent and standardized access to reliable information for businesses, consumers, repair and recycling companies, and authorities.

The DPP will be introduced gradually for certain product groups. The first areas to be covered include selected batteries. Other groups such as textiles, iron and steel, or construction products are to follow.

Depending on the product category, the DPP may include information on:

  • Safety and compliance
  • Origin and supply chain
  • Material composition
  • Repairability and maintenance
  • Environmental or sustainability performance
  • Reusability and recyclability

Affected actors

  • Manufacturers (placing on the market or putting into service in the EU) must provide a Digital Product Passport
  • Importers also have the obligation if they place products from non-EU countries on the market in the EU.
  • Distributors must ensure that affected products have a DPP.
  • Traders must provide their customers with easy access to the DPP (e.g. via QR code/link on the product or in the product information).

Digital Product Passport Service Provider

Digital Product Passport service providers can take over the processing, storage and provision of DPP data on behalf of an economic operator. This use is generally optional, companies can also manage the data themselves. mandate

Digital product passport registry

Since July 2026, the EU-wide register for Digital Product Passports has been available. When placing DPP-obligatory products on the market, a unique identifier must be registered. This identifier should at least indicate:

  • whether a DPP is present and
  • where the data is stored.

The EU Commission may in the future supplement the identification with further requirements. Registration is mandatory for product groups subject to DPP; in addition, voluntary submission of additional data is possible.
