The Free Trade Agreement between the EFTA States and Mercosur is an important milestone for Swiss exporters. Switzerland Global Enterprise monitors the ratification process in all signatory states and regularly keeps you informed about the progress.
Current Status
On 17.06.2026, the National Council, rejected the federal decree on the EFTA–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement in its first reading by 96 vs. 86 votes. The approval process will now proceed to the second chamber of Swiss Parliament, the Council of States, which has the same rights as the National Council. It will as first step decide whether to proceed, followed by a debate in substance and adoption by majority vote. The remaining differences are then settled between the chambers (differences-settlement procedure), before the final vote is taken in each chamber.
