Swiss and Liechtenstein-based companies may be affected by rules that initially apply to importers. This French-language webinar provides an update on carbon mechanisms, online trade, and steel measures as of 29 September 2026.

Carbon mechanisms: data to prepare for your clients

Since January 2026, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has entered its final phase. Even if the exporter is not directly liable, its European customer may ask for information on the tariff classification, non-preferential origin, production site and emissions related to the goods. The webinar highlights the importance of verifying the classification and origin of products. It also reminds that the UK CBAM is due to come into force in January 2027 and that Swiss goods do not benefit from the exemption provided for by the EU under the conditions set out.

”Even if it doesn’t apply to you, Swiss exporter, you will be affected because in fact, European importers will ask you for a lot of information.”

Online trade: distinguishing between import duties and VAT

Since 1 July 2026, the European Union has abolished the customs duty exemption for low-value shipments. The webinar presents a temporary fixed fee of EUR 3, applied per declaration line, until the planned launch of the Customs Data Platform in 2028. This fee is separate from VAT, which is subject to different rules. For online sales, it is therefore important to check the shipping scheme, the type of declaration and the product data to be transmitted.

”You really need to distinguish between customs aspects with the fixed import duty and VAT aspects because the impacts are not the same.”
Maëva Rancoeur, Oveo Lawyer

Steel: quotas and proof of origin

New EU measures on steel have been in force since 1 July 2026. They cover 30 product categories and include tariff quotas, with a 50% duty outside the quota, depending on presentation. Exporters need to check the classification and origin of their products. From 1 October 2026, a mill certificate indicating the country of melting and casting and the cast number may be required for the products concerned. The webinar also discusses UK measures on steel.

Watch the webinar recording to review the rules presented and the information you need to prepare based on your products, markets, and role in the logistics chain.
