Mechanical, Electrical and Metal Sector in Pakistan: Opportunities for Swiss Exporters

Swiss Business Council, Karachi

Apr 28, 2026

Pakistan's Mechanical, Electrical and Metal (MEM) sector is a cornerstone of the country's manufacturing landscape, spanning automotive, engineering, electronics, and textiles. With most machinery demand met through imports – rising by 29.37 percent in July of fiscal year 2025-26 alone – and a growing focus on renewable energy, the sector offers concrete opportunities for Swiss suppliers of industrial machinery, power equipment, and clean energy technologies.

Growth is driven by industrial modernization and ambitious renewable energy targets, with the Pakistani government aiming for 30 percent of electricity generation from renewables by 2030. The wind energy market is expected to expand at a CAGR of over 5 percent, while the solar segment is projected to reach 9.77 gigawatts by 2028. Swiss companies such as ABB, Accelleron, and Hitachi Energy are already active in the market, particularly in solar and wind projects and power automation. Incentives through Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Special Technology Zones (STZs), combined with reduced duties for selected sectors, further support new market entrants.
